Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Feynman path integrals are becoming increasingly important in the applications of quantum mechanics and field theory. The path integral formulation of quantum anomalies, i.e. the quantum breaking of certain symmetries, can now cover all the known quantum anomalies in a coherent manner. In this book the authors provide an introduction to the path integral method in quantum field theory and its applications to the analyses of quantum anomalies. No previous knowledge of field theory beyond advanced undergraduate quantum mechanics is assumed. The book provides the first coherent introductory treatment of the path integral formulation of chiral and Weyl anomalies, with applications to gauge theory in two and four dimensions, conformal field theory and string theory. Explicit and elementary path integral calculations of most of the quantum anomalies covered are given. The conceptual basis of the path integral bosonization in two-dimensional theory, which may have applications to condensed matter theory, for example, is clarified. The book also covers the recent interesting developments in the treatment of fermions and chiral anomalies in lattice gauge theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The generalization of QCD from three to NC colors, developed in 1974 by Nobel laureate Gerard 't Hooft, has proved to be an extraordinarily useful and robust theoretical extension for studying the behavior of strong interaction physics. This book is the proceedings of the first-ever meeting exclusively devoted to large NC QCD. The workshop brought together representatives of many subdisciplines for a “meeting of minds” on topics ranging from finite temperature and density to the lattice, perturbative QCD, instantons, mesons, baryons, and nuclear physics. Beginning with 't Hooft's keynote presentation, the contributions are designed to introduce uses of large NC methods in each specialty to a broader particle physics audience. Contents:Large N (G 't Hooft)Instantons and the Large Nc Limit of QCD (T Schäfer)Glueballs and AdS/CFT (J Terning)Regge Asymptotics in Multi-Colour QCD (G P Korchemsky)QCD Evolution Equations (A V Belitsky)Baryons (A V Manohar)Excited Baryon Production and Decays (C E Carlson)Heavy Baryons: A Combined Large Nc and Heavy Quark Expansion for Electroweak Currents (B A Gelman)Colourless Mesons in a Polychromatic World (A Pich)Large Nc Means Nc = 3 (M D Scadron)and other papers Readership: Graduate students, academics and researchers in high energy and nuclear physics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most frequently asked questions that confront the fetal medicine trainee/expert on a daily basis are “Is the finding real or merely an artifact?” and “Is the diagnosis correct?”. However, to be able to find the description of an abnormal ultrasound finding in a textbook, one generally has to search by the definite diagnosis, which has not been done as yet. This uneasy feeling was the first factor that directed the layout of Ultrasound of Congenital Fetal Anomalies: Differential Diagnosis and Prognostic Indicators, Second Edition. Copiously illustrated, the book displays fetal anomalies by scanning view and descriptions of all major ultrasound planes, detailing what can be considered a normal view and what cannot. See What’s New in the Second Edition: Early detection of fetal anomalies (1214 weeks) Ultrasound in fetal infections and in twins The nuchal translucency issue, the newest intracranial translucency as well as the range of congenital anomalies detectable at this gestational age Expanded coverage of heart anomalies, including arrhythmias and early fetal echocardiography The author’s mission continues to be to provide guidance on how to quickly recognize and diagnose congenital fetal anomalies, beginning at the beginning with ultrasound sigh all the way through to final diagnosis.

Book excerpt: The search for a quantum theory of the gravitational field is one of the great open problems in theoretical physics. This book presents a self-contained discussion of the concepts, methods and applications that can be expected in such a theory. The two main approaches to its construction — the direct quantisation of Einstein's general theory of relativity and string theory — are covered. Whereas the first attempts to construct a viable theory for the gravitational field alone, string theory assumes that a quantum theory of gravity will be achieved only through a unification of all the interactions. However, both employ the general method of quantization of constrained systems, which is described together with illustrative examples relevant for quantum gravity. There is a detailed presentation of the main approaches employed in quantum general relativity: path-integral quantization, the background-field method and canonical quantum gravity in the metric, connection and loop formulations. The discussion of string theory centres around its quantum-gravitational aspects and the comparison with quantum general relativity. Physical applications discussed at length include the quantization of black holes, quantum cosmology, the indications of a discrete structure of spacetime, and the origin of irreversibility. This third edition contains new chapters or sections on quantum gravity phenomenology, Horava-Lifshitz quantum gravity, analogue gravity, the holographic principle, and affine quantum gravity. It will present updates on loop quantum cosmology, the LTB model, asymptotic safety, and various discrete approaches. The third edition also contains pedagogical extensions throughout the text. This book will be of interest to researchers and students working in relativity and gravitation, cosmology, quantum field theory and related topics. It will also be of interest to mathematicians and philosophers of science.
