Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While well-known for his book-length work, philosopher Peter Unger's articles have been less widely accessible. These two volumes of Unger's Philosophical Papers include articles spanning more than 35 years of Unger's long and fruitful career. Dividing the articles thematically, this first volume collects work in epistemology and ethics, among other topics, while the second volume focuses on metaphysics. Unger's work has advanced the full spectrum of topics at the heart of philosophy, including epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of language and philosophy of mind, and ethics. Unger advances radical positions, going against the so-called "commonsense philosophy" that has dominated the analytic tradition since its beginnings early in the twentieth century. In epistemology, his articles advance the view that nobody ever knows anything and, beyond that, argue that nobody has any reason to believe anything--and even beyond that, they argue that nobody has any reason to do anything, or even want anything. In metaphysics, his work argues that people do not really exist--and neither do puddles, plants, poodles, and planets. But, as Unger has often changed his favored positions, from one decade to the next, his work also advances the opposite, "commonsense" positions: that there are in fact plenty of people, puddles, plants and planets and, quite beyond that, we know it all to be true. On most major philosophical questions, both of these sides of Unger's significant work are well represented in this major two volume collection. Unger's vivid writing style, intellectual vitality, and fearlessness in the face of our largest philosophical questions, make these volumes of great interest not only to the philosophical community but to others who might otherwise find contemporary philosophy dry and technical.

Book excerpt: This special volume is devoted to the synthesis and review of theoretical and conceptual approaches associated with familial and non-familial connections across the life span. An important book as society “returns to the family,” it compares and contrasts different disciplinary perspectives associated with intergenerational relationships. Because intergenerational relationships have been the focus of research in many disciplines, various perspectives have emerged about kin and non-kin connections. Renewed interest in families and familial connections is due largely to events and situations occurring in complex, modernized societies which place the intergenerational nexus on center stage. The leading researchers represented in this outstanding book provide rare opportunity for the scholarly comparison of the various perspectives in the broader spectrum of family relations. Families: Intergenerational and Generational Connecting is a significant addition to the body of research on family connections. The three major areas of generational and intergenerational connections include theoretical and conceptual perspectives, connections within the family, and connections outside the family. As the use of families as support networks for individual members increases, this timely book will be an invaluable aid to educators, students, and researchers concerned about families and familial and non-familial relationships. Counselors and therapists will value this enlightening book with its diverse theoretical and conceptual perspectives on kinship, intergenerational solidarity and relations, social supports, and cross-national perspectives on family connections.

Book excerpt: No One Left Behind: How Nurse Practitioners Are Changing The Canadian Health Care System, is a collection of stories from NPs across Canada, sharing their most memorable experiences with patients, which clearly illustrate the critical role they play throughout the health care system. Each story is compelling and unique in its own way; true-life accounts which will take you on an emotional journey, however, one that defines a genuine passion that exists for their work. The role of an NP has evolved significantly over the years, and is in different stages of progress throughout the country. While there are still legislative and regulatory barriers which prevent Nurse Practitioners from performing their work to the full scope of their practice, their focus on patient care remains the very foundation of their profession. This book shares a variety of stories from NPs across all sectors of the health care system to provide detailed accounts of what they do. In their line of work, they are often reminded of our shared vulnerability as a society, and how that susceptibility connects us. NPs work with patients in all settings in their quest to achieve health—whatever that may mean to the patient. No One Left Behind is a moving tribute to NPs who have devoted their lives to caring for others, revisiting some of the most poignant experiences of their careers.
