Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story, Benjamin Makes His Mark, takes place when there are no telephones in the beginning of the story, at least for most of the country people, no central heating, no electric sweepers, and no electric refrigerators yet. They have a cabinet with a square box outlined in metal. This holds a block of ice. They use wood and coal for cooking and baking. They have a parlor heater to heat the living room, and the kitchen stove heats the kitchen. Some people have a fireplace in both the living room and in the kitchen and some in a bedroom upstairs. They grow most of their food and raise livestock for their milk, butter, and meat and raise chickens for eggs and for the meat. They also raise a few geese or turkeys and have their own clucks (breeding chickens). Most of the clothing is sewed with a sewing machine you pedal for power, no electric sewing machines yet. There is no transportation to school (one-room schoolhouses), no taxi, or bus. Some towns have a trolley. There are trains and no airplanes. Horses are used for the family transportation. No bowling alleys, tennis courts, and golf courses; just baseball played in the fields by the children. Some farms still use kerosene lamps and candles; they are not yet hooked up to electric. Cleaning the outhouse (outside toilet) is a very difficult job but must be done once a yearand lime thrown in the pit below.

Book excerpt: “A thoughtful next step for readers of Andrew Clements.” —BCCB (about Ethan Marcus Stands Up) Ethan and Erin go to Tech Camp and try to win a chance to “make” a difference in classrooms everywhere in this hilarious follow-up to Ethan Marcus Stands Up. Ethan and Erin Marcus may only be eleven months apart age-wise, but they are a million miles apart in every other respect. Ethan’s laid back and takes things in stride. Erin’s a little more…intense and doesn’t really like to go with the flow. So when these two polar opposites are both invited to attend a prestigious invention/maker camp during winter break it seems almost impossible. Even though Erin and Ethan have reached a kind of truce, Erin thinks that his invitation to the camp was a mistake. And for that reason, Ethan decides to go. He has something to prove to everyone—but mostly to himself—and he’s convinced that his desk-evator idea has great potential…if he can do it right. But the Marcus siblings are going to have to find new partners. This is especially important to Erin whose rival, Romanov, is also attending the camp. Erin’s never forgiven him for his comment about “girls” having no place in science. She’s determined to beat him. But then she overhears someone talking about Romanov’s project, and decides that she’ll never be able to compete with his game-changing invention. So, what now? What if the Marcus siblings combine their ideas, their brains, and their teams, and make something spectacular? With only one day left, can Erin and Ethan actually create a workable model of their idea, and is it enough to win?

Book excerpt: The visual imagery of Neolithic Britain and Ireland is spectacular. While the imagery of passage tombs, such as Knowth and Newgrange, are well known the rich imagery on decorated portable artefacts is less well understood. How does the visual imagery found on decorated portable artefacts compare with other Neolithic imagery, such as passage tomb art and rock art? How do decorated portable artefacts relate chronologically to other examples of Neolithic imagery? Using cutting edge digital imaging techniques, the Making a Mark project examined Neolithic decorated portable artefacts of chalk, stone, bone, antler, and wood from three key regions: southern England and East Anglia; the Irish Sea region (Wales, the Isle of Man and eastern Ireland); and Northeast Scotland and Orkney. Digital analysis revealed, for the first time, the prevalence of practices of erasure and reworking amongst a host of decorated portable artefacts, changing our understanding of these enigmatic artefacts. Rather than mark making being a peripheral activity, we can now appreciate the central importance of mark making to the formation of Neolithic communities across Britain and Ireland. The volume visually documents and discusses the contexts of the decorated portable artefacts from each region, discusses the significance and chronology of practices of erasure and reworking, and compares these practices with those found in other Neolithic contexts, such as passage tomb art, rock art and pottery decoration. A contribution from Antonia Thomas also discusses the settlement art and mortuary art of Orkney, while Ian Dawson and Louisa Minkin contribute with a discussion of the collaborative fine art practices established during the project.

Book excerpt: "Cover me while I cut around that blue Mondeo and ambush the guy in the grey suit.” There are not many successful entrepreneurs who will enthusiastically break off in the middle of a multi-million pound deal to have a huge snowball fight in the car park with their finance director. But then Mark Mills is not just any successful entrepreneur. Whether organising one of his infamous Summer Christmas parties, flying to New York to find a new business idea or staying up all night to celebrate a successful deal, Mark Mills has always believed in the absolute importance of having fun in business. And not just for him, but for his employees, customers and suppliers too. His brilliantly unique approach has more than paid off. Mark's infectious enthusiasm, relentless energy, can-do approach and spirit of adventure have powered him to the very pinnacle of entrepreneurial success, both in his own businesses and by helping others to do the same in theirs. Over the years he has won countless Entrepreneur of the Year Awards and been asked to give speeches at prestigious events around the world about his achievements. Making Your Mark tells the fascinating and entertaining story of Mark’s extraordinary success in business, from selling broken biscuits at the age of 8, through his early years selling everything from payphones to post boxes, to his outstanding success creating Cardpoint, the cash machine business he founded at the age of 29 which at its peak was valued at £170 million. But just as importantly, it also tells the story of Mark's disasters along the way, about the times when things went badly wrong and when failure was more often the outcome than success. Along the way Mark shares his unique Golden Rules on how to achieve your own success in business, from learning how to think like an entrepreneur to creating a great business model, from understanding how to build a strong team to learning how to communicate effectively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a remarkable decade of public investment in higher education, some 200 new university campuses were established worldwide between 1961 and 1970. This volume offers a comparative and connective global history of these institutions, illustrating how their establishment, intellectual output and pedagogical experimentation sheds light on the social and cultural topography of the long 1960s. With an impressive geographic coverage - using case studies from Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia - the book explores how these universities have influenced academic disciplines and pioneered new types of teaching, architectural design and student experience. From educational reform in West Germany to the establishment of new institutions with progressive, interdisciplinary curricula in the Commonwealth, the illuminating case studies of this volume demonstrate how these universities shared in a common cause: the embodiment of 'utopian' ideals of living, learning and governance. At a time when the role of higher education is fiercely debated, Utopian Universities is a timely and considered intervention that offers a wide-ranging, historical dimension to contemporary predicaments.
