Download History of European Morals from Augustus to Charlemagne by William Edward Hartpole Lecky in PDF Full Free and published by . This book was released on 1869 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book examines the history of European morals. It focuses on the period of time from Augustus to Charlemagne. The first chapter in this volume examines the nature of the moral ideal that the new religion, Christianity, introduced, and also the methods by which it attempted to realise it. And at the very outset of this enquiry it is necessary to guard against a serious error. It is common with many persons to establish a comparison between Christianity and Paganism, by placing the teaching of the Christians in juxtaposition with corresponding passages from the writings of Marcus Aurelius or Seneca, and to regard the superiority of the Christian over the philosophical, teaching as a complete measure of the moral advance that was effected by Christianity. But a moment's reflection is sufficient to display the injustice of such a conclusion. The ethics of Paganism were part of a philosophy. The ethics of Christianity were part of a religion. In the second chapter in this Volume II, the author examines the position assigned to women in the community, and to the virtues and vices that spring directly from the relations of the sexes. The two first steps which are taken towards the elevation of woman are probably the cessation of the custom of purchasing wives, and the construction of the family on the basis of monogamy. In the first periods of civilisation, the marriage contract was arranged between the bridegroom and the father of the bride, on the condition of a sum of money being paid by the former to the latter." Book excerpt: Can anything separate us from God's love? Does He really love us, no matter what? How does He feel about me when I snap at anything that moves? When I've failed as a parent? When my thoughts are gutter-level? When my tongue is sharp? Have I drifted too far? Waited too long? Slipped too much? The answer is found in one of life's sweetest words-grace. It is God who lovingly holds us in the eternal grip of His grace. Our good deeds won't help. Perfect performance is not required. The God who made us has redeemed us and covered our sinfulness with His righteousness. His holiness is sufficient for all our sin. And that's grace. Best-selling author Max Lucado proclaims the grace of God to be "the greatest discovery of my life." And he wants to share that discovery by taking us on a journey through the mountaintop truths found in Paul's letter to the Romans. "Romans is the grandest treatise on grace ever written. You'll find the air fresh and the view clear."

Book excerpt: Before landing on the highway that is "gracious" (in his introduction) -or encountering the flash of light that greets us as we turn the page, we may think it impossible for any self-respecting believer to presume upon God for a clue into His times and seasons of history and . . . the apocalypse. But what if the Lord has left a secret set of timers in the center of the Apocalypse (John's Revelation)-sets of "clocks," as the author calls them, for the terminal generation? And . . . what if these clocks are elastic (flexible)? Could this really be one reason why Jesus said that no one but the Father knows the exact day of His returning? If this is so, what season now defines the future of the world's remaining super power? It is here that F.T. Chisholm has sharpened his pencil to again unpack a description of these clocks that telescope deep into the biblical Apocalypse; this time focusing on the courtship between Heaven and earth-while zeroing in more carefully on the relationship between the people of this very special nation, and the God of love.Against this backdrop he ventures down a path less traveled, taking us on a whirlwind tour through John's Revelation; first confirming the uneasiness felt in the night, as our world seems to race into the future just a little faster than any of us finds comfortable (future shock)- while concluding his startling discoveries with the Blessed Hope.A must read for anyone seriously considering the destiny of these United States.
